Winter eagles

Winter Eagles

Welcome to this photo workshop at Smøla (Norway) 12.01-15.01 2017 with Ole J Liodden. During this workshop you will get great opportunities to photograph White-tailed eagles, seabirds and ducks from two hides and boat. The winter light on this time of the year is usually amazing, and it is full moon 12th January, so get ready for some inspiring days on the north western coast of Norway.

Smøla has the highest density of White-tailed eagles in Europe, and there are plenty of birds to photograph. You will have great opportunities to photograph these magnificent birds both from the hide on land and at sea from a small boat. With all these eagles you can expect interesting activity and action photography of this large raptor.

During this workshop you will learn more about wildlife and nature photography. Ole J Liodden will be the host of this workshop, and he will share his secrets about photographing birds in flight, action and portraits photography of birds, and how to prepare and plan your next photo project (photography by purpose). You will be in a small group with maximum 9 photographer with the same interests as you.

The eagle photo hide

The Alula photo hide is lowered into the ground for an optimal photographic perspective at eye level with the eagles. One-way glass minimizing the disturbance to the birds, and you can observe and photograph the birds outside like in a movie theater, while the birds only see a mirror when they look into the windows. When shooting through the glass you loose approximately one f/stop of light, otherwise the picture quality is very good! There are windows in two directions so you can also shoot backlight. The hide has high comfort with electricity installed, underfloor heating system (approx 20 C), ventilation, toilets, good chairs and tripod heads with lens mounting plates. You don’t need to bring your own tripod, and everything is ready for you to photograph eagles (and ravens) up close.

Eagles at sea

For photographing White-tailed eagles and seabirds at sea we use a small, open boat with good space for 4-5 photographers. With this boat we can move around outside the island and photograph many different eagles. These wild eagles are used to catch fish from the surface (which we throw to them), and we will try to get the eagles in action with nice background and in great light conditions. Audun Lie Dahl will be or guide at sea.

About photography

It’s an advantage to use long telephoto lenses like 400mm, 500mm, 600mm or 300mm with 1,4X tele extender when photographing from the hide. A camera with fast autofocus and high ISO is also good to have. There are tripod heads in the hides for mounting your lenses. 70-200mm or 300mm are most suitable when shooting from the boat.
